State Battery Recycling Programs to Receive $63 Million from Energy Department

The funding will support the extraction and reuse of critical minerals remaining in spent batteries.

The Department of Energy (DOE) allocated $63 million to the expansion of state and local government battery recycling programs.

Many clean energy technologies require rare earth elements like cobalt, lithium, and graphite for their own parts and batteries, which can be difficult and expensive to source. However, when their energy is drained, used batteries still contain large amounts of these minerals, and battery recycling programs help to sustainably reuse these crucial elements.

“America’s revolutionary clean energy future requires a modernized manufacturing sector,” said Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “The funding announced today will equip small- and medium-sized manufacturers with cutting-edge technologies to improve operations efficiency and expand battery recycling, removing barriers to advancement and bolstering the nation’s competitive standing.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for Secretary Granholm as she guides the Energy Department.
  • For Director Giulia Siccardo as she heads the DOE’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains.
  • For the president, vice president, and administration officials regarding the management of the nation’s energy resources.
